Lucille Helena Harris was born on November 14th 1925 looking over her accomplishments one would say she was destined to become a teacher. She was a Pembroke girl and obtained her early education at Central School and was fortunate to obtain a scholarship to the Berkeley Institute. Once there she was under the guidance of Frederick S Furbert who himself achieved a milestone in becoming the first Bermudian Principle of the school and Mr. Roderick A. N James was also an influential Principle.
She grew up during the time of racial segregation and like many born during that era was denied the opportunity to attend events such as Bermuda Athletic Association, where she had to sneak in to watch an event. Lucille excelled in her studies and graduated before the scholarship was finished.
She furthered her studies at Toronto Normal School, or present day Ontario Institute for studies in Education. She attended there from 1947-1948. She was an advocate for the use of information technology in teaching. Upon returning home she was more than prepared to go into the teaching field and took up her first position at the Central School (Victor Scott) than Prospect Primary and with Ms. Mae Francis.
. In 1956, she married Mr. Charles Arthur Harris a bus driver and resident from St. Kitts. They later moved from Pembroke to Hill View Estate in Warwick. When her husband founded his own trucking business she went to work at Prospect Primary School. Lucille was so involved in Education that she operated her own Nursery School during the summer and taught Sunday School. In 1985, she received a grant to study information technology at the University of West Virginia College of Graduate Studies, which later became the Marshall University College of Graduate Studies.
She was keenly interested in music and her instrument of choice was the Piano. She received a certificate of Excellence in 1993 from the Bermuda College. After the death of her husband she moved to Canada in 2011. Mrs. Harris was highly religious and joined the Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was described as a devote wife and Mother who really had teaching at heart. Mrs. Harris was bestowed by the Howard University Alumni Association for outstanding Contributions to teaching. She received a certificate of service in 1988 for 44 years of teaching by the Ministry of Education.
Thank you Teacher Harris for a Job well done. Scribed by your former Student
